The Kangra network, established in March 2007, is used mainly as a test site for newly-developed prototype routers and firmware, as well as a staging site for equipment about to be deployed in remote locations. The test site is built of two links - one serving as a service and benchmark channel, while the other is used for testing new equipment. The comparison between the channels allows to easily gauge the quality of tested equipment by comparing various quality indicators on the two channels. In addition to being a test and staging site, the Kangra network provides connectivity to the Kangra Polytechnic and some of its staff and students. The provision of connectivity to the Kangra Polytechnic which has an IT section where 120 students from Himachal are enrolled each year, was an excellent starting point for developing various other channels of cooperation such as guest lectures at the college, site visits, and hopefully some joint projects in the future.
